The sign and symptoms are;

  • Fatigue and weakness - this is due to the body not having enough red blood cells to carry the oxygen to the whole body.
  • Pale or yellowish skin - this is because less haemoglobin carrying oxygen in the body as blood that contain oxygen gives red colour to the tissues in our body.
  • Palpitation - to increase the blood flow in body.
  • Shortness of breath - less oxygen is carried by the blood cell to the lungs and body.
  • Heart problem - irregular heart beat because the heart will work harder to bring the oxygen throughout the body.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness and headache - less oxygen deliver throughout the body and brain.
  • Cold hands and cramp feet - energy from the muscle will be used because there are not enough oxygen in the body to produce energy.

People with anemia usually is not targeted to be cured but it is given treatment to lessen the symptoms of anemia and also to improve the level of haemoglobin in the blood. The common treatment for anemia such as;

  • iron treatment (ferrous sulphate) - to replace the lack of iron in diet or excess loss of iron.
  • diet rich in iron, folate and vitamin B12 - dark leafy green vegetables, iron fortified bread and cereals , beans, meat, legumes etc.
  • blood transfusion - blood transfusion is only for people with severe anemia as a new red blood cell will be given to compensate the loss of red blood cells in people with severe anemia. It will increase the amount of red blood cell carrying oxygen.
  • Bone marrow treatment (stimulants) / transplant - this transplant helps the bone marrow to produce more blood cells.
